Favorite/Not So Favorite Friday

friday favs

It’s Friday again and that means time for another installment of Favorite/Not so Favorite Friday!!

black friday In the spirit of the excitement of the day, today’s favorite is Today.BLACK Friday!!  I love spending Thanksgiving night mapping out the best route to the stores I want to go to.  This year it was 4 am Kohl’s for the doorbuster deal on the collage frame jewelry box for my daughter, then to Gottschalks for cute suede boots for Dominique also, CVS was next for a few stocking stuffers, at 6 am it was Target for some Lego Star Wars that was half off (but still $50.wow, for Legos?  Well, that is what he wanted), then to the whole reason I wanted to go out for the day.Game Stop for the Wii Fit for my daughter since Santa is bringing the kids a Wii System!!! They are going to be so excited!! And I just love going out and spending a whole day on Christmas shopping for them!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
parking lot Now onto the Not so Favorite.  Today’s Not so Favorite is people who ask me to buy things in the parking lot.  They walk around from car to car and walk up on you when your back is to them.  I think it is rude and my response always is, “Sorry, I don’t shop in parking lots.”  Today was the worst.  People, if you would like people to support your teams, stand by the door of the store and ask like everyone else.  Please don’t stalk me in the parking lot or by my car.
And there it is folks!  Thanks for checking in! And another thanks to Spoiled Mommy for giving me this idea!
FUTURE STAR for ADD and ADHD
Wednesday, November 26th, 2008
add brain More and more children are being diagnosed with ADD and ADHD.  Many doctors and teachers disagree on the diagnosis and treatments of children suspected of having these disorders.  As a parent, it is very hard to hear from a teacher that he/she suspects that your child has this problem.  Well for those of you moms in CA there are 1 problems with this:  teachers are NOT allowed to make medical diagnosis’ SO don’t let them.  But if you have suspicions about whether or not your child does have this disorder, even in the smallest way consider seeing a natural doctor instead of your pediatrician.   There are many natural doctors out there that believe that poor nutrition is to blame from many things including these disorders.
future star My son’s second grade teacher was convinced that he had ADD and we took him to the doctor and asked the school to do some testing, but nobody but that teacher believed it was in the best interest of the child.  One thing I have done though is started giving him a product by Symmetry Direct called Future Star.  In fact this product is responsible for me becoming a partner with the company.  Too many fabulous stories from moms about how much it has helped their children.  So I started with the company and also started supplementing my son with it.  I can say I noticed a huge difference in his personality.
prescription bottle Let me back up.my son’s only issue seems to be that he is shy and doesn’t ask for help.  He struggles with writing and language analysis.  He thinks it’s boring and nobody has sparked his interest in it.  And how could they.it is just constant worksheets and no one on one teaching if needed.  It has been a frustrating few years.  But Future Star (2 times a day-with breakfast and dinner) has made a huge difference in his ability to pay attention.but he still hates those subjects and therefore doesn’t try to do them well.
dr cohn of symmetry A very well known chiropractor in Southern California, Dr. Howard Cohn wrote an article called “The COHN (Compelling Original Health News) Report” about ADD and ADHD treatments in children.  He talks about the medical treatments and the reasons to stay away from them.  Besides just Symmetry’s Future Star, there are some other products that can be used in conjunction to add to the positive effect you are looking for without using synthetic drugs.
He also has a practice in Newport Beach, CA that offers a once weekly FREE workshop that not only offers you the chance to hear about health the natural way, but also includes a FREE vegan dinner from Mother’s Market.  Please see his site by clicking HERE for more information.
I understand how difficult these decisions can be, but please know that this information is just meant to help you make informed decisions with the best intentions of your child in mind.
Future Star is not only used for ADD and ADHD, it is a Phenomenal multi-vitamin for any child or student wanting extra brain food’s helping their brain function!  Check it out by clicking on the link: Live Better With Symmetry on the right side of the page.  Feel free to contact me at lisasurvillas@healthiestlife4me.com for more information.
Lean Protein for the Holiday Season
Tuesday, November 25th, 2008
turkey The most important part of our diet’s in order to build lean muscle is PROTEIN.  Now that the holiday eating season is upon us, we need to pay attention to how to make sure we are getting enough.  Lean muscle controls our metabolism.  The more muscle mass you have, the more fat you will burn at rest.  During the holiday season, our meals usually have more carbs and starches on the tables to tempt us.  In order to stay on target, it is important to understand where we can get the lean protein from to feed our muscles.
The holiday staple for both Thanksgiving and Christmas is TURKEY.  And what a great staple it is.  Turkey is a great source of lean protein.
Here is a table that explains how much protein is in different cuts of turkey:
Type (3.5 oz portion) Calories Total Fat Protein
Breast with skin 194 8 grams 29 grams
Breast w/o skin 161 4 grams 30 grams
Wing w/ skin 238 13 grams 27 grams
Leg w/skin 213 11 grams 28 grams
Dark meat w/skin 232 13 grams 27 grams
Dark meat w/o skin 192 8 grams 28 grams
Skin only 482 44 grams 19 grams
turkey 2What this table from the University of Illinois show us is that the  best cut of meat is the breast without skin.  It provides the highest amount of protein with the lowest amount of fat and calories.  If you are not a fan of white meat, then the cut of dark meat without skin is the next best choice, although it has twice the amount of fat as the breast.
In addition to Turkey being a great source of protein, the University of Illinois says that turkey “is an inexpensive source of iron, zinc, phosphorus, potassium and B vitamins.”
Potassium is used to “maintain fluid and electrolyte balance in the body.” according to Wikipedia.  Translated.potassium will keep you from dehydrating and from storing excess water weight.  Besides turkey, a great source of potassium is an avocado.  Bananas and potatoes also have potassium, but are foods that act like sugar in the body.
Check out the story, “Ultra Vitality-What and Why” to see what the other vitamins included in turkey are good for!
Of course, adding things to your turkey like gravy and cranberry sauce add to the levels of sugars, carbs, and fats (not the good ones) and only defeat all your hard work.
turkey craft If you are choosing to have side dishes, limit the simple carbs and stick with green, crunchy veggies.  If you can choose a carb like a yam.it is the best choice you can make.  This is a low-glycemic index carb and will not act like sugar in your body.
Hope you have a happy holiday season with your families and that your fitness goals stay on track!  (PS.I hope I can stay on track too!)
It is also important to understand, when looking at Ultra Vitality why many of the amounts are higher than the Daily Value.  Symmetry does this because “Daily value can be understood as ‘minimum wage’ for nutrition where it is enough to get by and prevent sickness, but not enough to be vibrant and happy.  For example, while 100% of Vitamin C  will not generate scurvy or other deficiency symptoms, studies show that about 8 times that amount can increase life span by five and a half years.  Thus, Ultra Vitality goes beyond the Daily Value recommendations on Vitamin C and other nutrients.
In addition to these amazing Vitamins and Minerals that are listed, Ultra Vitality includes an antioxidant blend, energy blend, nutritive herbal blend/urinary health blend, proprietary blend: digestive support/enzymes/probiotics, chlorphyll blend, and a super food blend/immune herbal blend.  These are comprised of all natural ingredients.  There is no caffine and no sugar in Ultra Vitality
Ultra Vitality is a vital part of everybody’s daily needs.  If you are interested in ordering, please see My Symmetry Page or click Live Better With Symmetry under blogroll.  Or you can contact me directly at lisasurvillas@healthiestlife4me.com.  In addition, the company has a Wellness Guarentee that gives you 120 days to like the product or your money back (contact me for details), so you either like them and feel better or you can get your money back.where is the harm in that?  Let’s get started on a journey to total health today!
Onto a New Season
Saturday, November 22nd, 2008
Last weekend was Zack’s last game of the fall season.  And of course, the next season starts right up.  This time he is playing NJB basketball.  He is in Division 3, which is 3rd and 4th graders.  He was so excited to start this season.  Last time he played was in 1st grade and it was considered more free throw warm upsRookie Division, which is basically an hour of learning drills.  He thought it was boring and didn’t get much actual time with the ball or getting instruction as an individual.  So he chose not to play his 2nd grade year because it would have been the same thing again.  When he remembered that he would be able to play on a team and have games, he was ready to play again.
dribbling We’ve had about 4 practices with a great dad as coach.  He is so good with the kids.  But you never know how you’ll match up when the games start because after all, you’ve only seen yourselves.  And while we’ve seen improvement in 4 practices, what does that really mean?
gettin the inbound We got to see how we stacked against another team today.it was our First game of the season.  We played a team of what seemed to be mostly 4th graders.  But it didn’t really matter because only 3 of the players really touched the ball.  And while those 3 players were really good, how sad for the other 7 kids.  What I was most impressed with is that our coach really taught the kids to pass the ball around and make sure that everybody had chances to touch it.  After all, isn’t that what each kid is playing for.  They want to play.not just be a body on the court filling up space.  It’s a lot of running up and down, up and down, up and down, to defense barely ever touch the ball.
As a parent of a kid who just loves to play and be a part of a team.I APPRECIATE the coach we were given.  He has the right idea.   And I know you are wondering.we lost 17-35 (i think that was the score.because it really doesn’t matter to me).  I am most excited about what the coach said to the kids after the game.”I am proud of you guys.  You passed the ball the way I asked.  You played a good game.  Now we are just going to work on playing harder in the game.”  Thanks Coach Powers (not that he’ll be reading this, but just in case.) I want you to know that I am very happy that we got a coach like you.lead us through a great season!
my lil guy playing D Let’s GO CELTICS!!
Here are some pictures of Zack during his first game!  He is number 11 (funny story: I picked up the uniforms for the coach on Fri night.  He told me I could pick one for Zack and bring him dressed.  When I went through the uniforms, there were 5 youth mediums - which was the smallest - so Zack wanted to be 11 since he is always 2 or 3 because he is always one of the smallest.  So Zack is 11 and kids bigger than him are 3, 5, and 10.  I think it’s really cute):
Favorite/Not So Favorite Friday
Friday, November 21st, 2008
A mom that I met on Twitter thought up this idea and encouraged others to do it on their blogs too.  So a GIANT thanks to Spoiled Mommy for the idea.  Check out her favs/not so favs too!
And so it is born here on Healthiest Life 4 Me.
friday favs
Every Friday I am going to post 1 of my favorite things and 1 of my not so favorite things.  It can be anything!  So be prepared and check often.you may just find something new to love too!  Or may agree with things not to love!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

FAVORITE:

old navy flannel pjs

My favorite article of clothing is hands down my Old Navy flannel pj bottoms.  They are comfortable and warm.  Most importantly, they are thick enough to be worn to take the trash out and to answer the door to a stranger in.  I honestly can say, I would be lost without them!  If you don’t have a pair, you should add this to your Christmas Wish List!  They are for sure a must have for every MOM!

Not So FAVORITE:

tide pen One of the biggest waste of money products on the market today, I believe is the Tide Pen.  While yes, you may get the stain out.you will probably take the color out of the material in the spot that you used it in.  How disappointing when you use in on an off white shirt to have a big actual white spot on it.  Or worse, a black shirt with a big white spot.  Not worth the money.try waiting ’til you get home and using simple Spray ‘n Wash instead.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So there you have it.my first ever Favorite/Not So Favorite Friday!
brandon langer from symmetry For the first time EVER, the company founder’s son, Brandon Langer who is the Director of Sales and Marketing for the US is coming here to Riverside, CA to kick off the new year.  He is coming to talk to us about how to build our businesses bigger and stronger in the new year!  This information is usually only available to us if we spend hundreds of dollars and attend a Seeds Of Success Workshop in Chicago.  To those of us here in Southern CA, that is a expensive trip.  So, please take advantage of this opportunity to learn from the BEST!
dr cohn of symmetry Also at this event, Dr. Howard Cohn is making his second appearance here in Riverside, CA.  The last time he spoke, I took 23 pages of notes.  And I know I missed about 20 more pages due to not being able to write fast enough.  His product training is invaluable to building a business.  His experiences in his practice (chiropractic) with the products and how they have HEALED so many will help you to explain to your customers just how VALUABLE these products are to their lives.
Now, obviously many of you are not business partners, but you are still invited to come and learn about the products, the valuable of residual income, and what Symmetry Direct can do for your life.either by business or by products.
rsvp graphic The deal is.I need RSVP’s because the room only holds a certain amount of people.  The person responsible for hosting this event is paying per head for space and it is VITAL that if you RSVP that you are coming.you must show UP!  Please let me know if you are interested.
Business Day for Dominique and Thanksgiving Celebrations at School
Friday, November 21st, 2008
Wednesday, November 19th was the kids last day of school until December 1st and of course many festivities were crammed into that one day.  There was a lunch time feast, cupcakes for fall, and business day all in a matter of a few hours.
zack's thanksgiving feast 08My son’s third grade class celebrated with a Thanksgiving Day Feast.  There was turkey, mashed potatoes, corn chowder, rolls, and pumpkin pie with cool whip of course.  Now, I had to send my son with his own lunch because I knew he wouldn’t be interested in eating any of this stuff.  But the kids, including him, had a great time together.   (My son is on the far left with the HUGE smile)
dominique's fun with cupcakes thanksgiving 08 My daughter’s class did not have a planned celebration because of the business day event they had planned, but I brought mini cupcakes for them to enjoy at lunch.  I am bad and didn’t get permission, but I am the room mom and that is the fun in that. (Nah.I know the teacher well and knew she would be ok with that)  The kids were so surprised and excited when they saw what treat I had brought for them.
Dominique's BusinessThe biggest part of the day was Business Day for fourth grade.  To begin with, let me explain the days leading up to this crazy excitement.  On the previous Thursday my daughter came home very upset that this fun day was happening the next week because on Monday her teacher encouraged them all to buy raffle tickets with their Ducks Bucks (the teacher is a huge Anaheim Ducks fan).  So my daughter did use all her money to buy these raffle tickets and won some pink and white Floam.  But the problem was that on Monday they were going to have to buy their business license if they wished to have a store at the event.  Dominique was broken because she had been looking forward to this since her friends last year did it.  I of course went in to discuss this with the teacher and there was a reason and she assured me that Dominique would be able to have a business for the event.  Then on to the next concern.the paperwork explaining the details says that we cannot start our items until the approval get returned on Monday - for selling to Ms. LeeWednesday’s event.  Well, Dominique dances from 4-8 straight through on Monday evenings and 4-8 with a half hour break on Tuesday evenings.  So Dominique was again upset because I made her do it all over the weekend and I helped.  She used Christmas silk flowers and floral tape to make flower topped pencils.  But of course, this was not yet approved.  I assured her it would not be a problem.  And of course, it wasn’t.  I just wish that the teachers understood that 5 days notice is not nearly enough for a project like this.  My daughter’s teacher is a first time fourth grade teacher so she has never done these things before, but the selling to other studentsothers have and always do it last minute.talk about disrespectful.  Anyhow.
Dominique named her business “The Write Flower” and she sold each pencil for $5 (all fake money) and she had tags available for $1 each in case they wanted to make them gifts. She started business day with $145 after buying her $125 business license.  The selling period lasted for zack got to enjoy biz day tooabout 45 minutes and there were 3rd and 4th graders shopping along with the book buddy classes (which are typically kinder thru 2nd graders.in my daughter’s classes case they are 2nd graders) and staff members shopping.  Services from cookies, cupcakes, brownies, snow cones, lemonade, root beer floats, origami, cards, Christmas ornaments, bookmarks, colored hair spray, getting your nails painted, tattoos, and different kinds of mini carnival games filled the pod.  It was crowded, loud, and chaotic, but the kids had so much fun.  When the time was up it was time to clean up and go back to class.  The kids counted their money up and my  daughter’s booth made over $400.  She was so excited.  She started with 130 pencils and ended with 60.  She couldn’t have been more excited.  And I  couldn’t have been ledgermore proud of her.  She did such a good job.
Now you think they would have spent some time discussing more about the books after the event, but because of the holiday and the quickly thrown together event her teacher said it was just for fun.  Apparently there is another event planned for the spring.  I told Dominique we would start planning for it in January after the holiday hustle and bustle was done.  She is interested in doing something new this time.  If you have suggestions or ideas of what she can do that is relatively inexpensive to put together, that she can do most of herself, and would sell great to kids and adults please feel free to comment it here!  All ideas are welcomed and appreciated.
The ONE HUNDRED PUSH-UP CHALLENGE
Thursday, November 20th, 2008
While hanging out on Twitter one night, I saw a blurb about being able to do push-ups.  My curiosity took over and I asked why she was so focused on the amount of push-ups she could do and how many weeks she had to do it in.  @Kelownagurl responded to me one hundred pushupswith a website with this 100 Push-up Challenge
I have become quite impressed with my strength in the past few months.  And although I am struggling with my diet again, I am fully focused on my training.  So, I inquired at 100 Push-up Challenge to see what all this fuss was about.  And now have committed to this challenge.  The program can be as long as 6 weeks depending upon how many push-ups you can currently do.
push up woman Here is how the program works:
1. Take an assessment of how many pushups you can do in one sitting.  Do the push-ups correctly and don’t cheat if you want the program to work.
2.  Go to the website 100 Push-up Challenge and email Steve and let him know that you are taking the challenge and he will add you to the list.  Admitting to someone that you are taking the challenge will keep you accountable.  Recruit a physical partner if you’d like to report to someone physically each week.  Feel free to comment here each week if you want to have encouragement from me.
3.  Print up each week and follow the directions.  You do push-ups 3 times a week and depending upon the week you are told to start in and the amount you are capable of will determine how your workout will look each day.
4.  Follow each week without cheating.
5.  When you complete week 6, you will rest for 2 days and then you will try to do a set of 100 push-ups!
push up man It may seem weird to have the need to do 100 push-ups, but the push-up is the most comprehensive upper body exercise that you can do.  And most importantly.it can be done ANYWHERE!!  You don’t need any special equipment or special facilities to do it in.  When executing a  regular push-up you are pushing 60% of your body weight.  When you elevate your feet and do decline push-ups you push 80% of your body weight.  Talk about upper body strength training.
So let’s get started on this journey together.  And just because I am starting my program next week, doesn’t mean you can’t start yours anytime.  You will be so proud of yourself for the accomplishment and even with the way your arms take shape!
