About two years ago, at age 22, I was diagnosed with Leukemia (cancer of the blood). Before being diagnosed, I would go to the gym but couldn’t work out because it was hard for me to breathe. Hi, my name is Karen and I am a 29-year-old wife and mother of two boys, 8 and 2. When I was 25, my hand started going numb. During this whole process of doctors and MRI’s, it was about three months. Three months of numbness on my whole right side of my body. Sometimes I would trip since I could not feel my foot, my hand just did not want to hold the curling iron tight, and I had tough time writing. But, it eventually it went away, and I never thought about it again. I really felt like I had pushed myself to my limit of stress and I created it myself.

Life went on and I had another baby. About 10 months after I had my baby, my right foot went numb. I thought it was the shoes I wore to work that day, but after a few days of that, the numbness was creeping again.I knew! I tried so hard to wish it away. I went online and tried to webMD my symptoms, but it kept leading me to MS. After about two weeks, I couldn’t deny it anymore so I told my husband. It was Super Bowl Sunday, my husband just left me at home with my two boys to go run an errand and all of a sudden, my left side of my body cramped up. Five minutes later, it happened again. then again. I literally cramped up for 2 weeks, sometimes minutes apart, sometimes hours, but not much more than that. Another month or so went by with sporadic cramping and burning feeling on certain areas of my body. My neurologist suggested that I think about taking medication.

I went home and thought about it, for days with the notion that I don’t have any other choice; if I don’t I am going to be in a wheelchair, maybe never be able to hold my children, or play catch with them. I really thought I would be better off dead!

Then I did some serious research. I found that some people have really good results from natural treatments and that MS is so different in everyone. Yes, some people are in a wheelchair, and others have had it many years having minor issues, therefore, I could be anywhere in between. Honestly, I may not have thought about going the natural way if all I had to do was take a pill for the rest of my life, but an injection everyday, it was worth another look.

I went to a holistic chiropractor who gave me some supplements for inflammation, suggesting that my nervous system is more affected since the foods I am eating are causing inflammation, even saying this is a treatment for all autoimmune diseases. CNN.com has a small article on Vitamins Experts Take and why they take them.  The talked to four doctors about the regimen they take and some offered up reasons why they take certain items.  What I found most suprising about this article is that only 3 of the 4 doctors took a multivitamin and omega-3, while all 4 took a vitamin D supplement.  Dr. Melina Jampolis, who practices in San Francisco, California, and specializes exclusively in nutrition for weight loss and disease prevention and treatment, says everyone should take a basic multivitamin. “I like to call it an insurance policy,” she says.  Dr. Andrew Weil says he takes Vitamin D because, “a Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to breast cancer, colon cancer, prostate cancer, heart disease, and multiple sclerosis, as well as other conditions. Studies show many of us are vitamin D deficient. Weil says look on the label to make sure you’re getting vitamin D3, not vitamin D2.”  Other supplements that top the list taken are magnesium, Co-Q-10, and antioxidants.  Both of the women doctors interviewed took a Calcium supplement to help prevent osteoporosis.

More and more children are being diagnosed with ADD and ADHD.  Many doctors and teachers disagree on the diagnosis and treatments of children suspected of having these disorders.  As a parent, it is very hard to hear from a teacher that he/she suspects that your child has this problem.  Well for those of you moms in CA there are 1 problems with this:  teachers are NOT allowed to make medical diagnosis’ SO don’t let them.  But if you have suspicions about whether or not your child does have this disorder, even in the smallest way consider seeing a natural doctor instead of your pediatrician.   There are many natural doctors out there that believe that poor nutrition is to blame from many things including these disorders.

A team of scientists from the University of Ulm, located in southwest Germany, report that resveratrol shows potential as a fat-fighting supplement, by both preventing weight gain and stopping some of the health problems caused by obesity.

In this cell-based study, researchers concluded that resveratrol inhibited the pre- fat cells from increasing and prevented them from converting into mature fat cells.  Resveratrol also reduced the cells’ production of certain proteins linked to the development of obesity-related disorders, such as Type 2 diabetes and clogged arteries.  Furthermore, resveratrol stimulated the production of a metabolism-regulating protein, called adiponectin, known to decrease the risk of heart attack.  Those who are obese are generally adiponectin deficient.
