The most important part of our diet’s in order to build lean muscle is PROTEIN. Now that the holiday eating season is upon us, we need to pay attention to how to make sure we are getting enough. Lean muscle controls our metabolism. The more muscle mass you have, the more fat you will burn at rest. During the holiday season, our meals usually have more carbs and starches on the tables to tempt us. In order to stay on target, it is important to understand where we can get the lean protein from to feed our muscles.
The holiday staple for both Thanksgiving and Christmas is TURKEY. And what a great staple it is. Turkey is a great source of lean protein.
Here is a table that explains how much protein is in different cuts of turkey:
| Type (3.5 oz portion) | Calories | Total Fat | Protein |
| Breast with skin | 194 | 8 grams | 29 grams |
| Breast w/o skin | 161 | 4 grams | 30 grams |
| Wing w/ skin | 238 | 13 grams | 27 grams |
| Leg w/skin | 213 | 11 grams | 28 grams |
| Dark meat w/skin | 232 | 13 grams | 27 grams |
| Dark meat w/o skin | 192 | 8 grams | 28 grams |
| Skin only | 482 | 44 grams | 19 grams |
What this table from the University of Illinois show us is that the best cut of meat is the breast without skin. It provides the highest amount of protein with the lowest amount of fat and calories. If you are not a fan of white meat, then the cut of dark meat without skin is the next best choice, although it has twice the amount of fat as the breast.
In addition to Turkey being a great source of protein, the University of Illinois says that turkey “is an inexpensive source of iron, zinc, phosphorus, potassium and B vitamins.”
Potassium is used to “maintain fluid and electrolyte balance in the body.” according to Wikipedia. Translated.potassium will keep you from dehydrating and from storing excess water weight. Besides turkey, a great source of potassium is an avocado. Bananas and potatoes also have potassium, but are foods that act like sugar in the body.
Check out the story, “Ultra Vitality-What and Why” to see what the other vitamins included in turkey are good for!
Of course, adding things to your turkey like gravy and cranberry sauce add to the levels of sugars, carbs, and fats (not the good ones) and only defeat all your hard work.
If you are choosing to have side dishes, limit the simple carbs and stick with green, crunchy veggies. If you can choose a carb like a yam.it is the best choice you can make. This is a low-glycemic index carb and will not act like sugar in your body.
Hope you have a happy holiday season with your families and that your fitness goals stay on track! (PS.I hope I can stay on track too!)

It is also important to understand, when looking at Ultra Vitality why many of the amounts are higher than the Daily Value. Symmetry does this because “Daily value can be understood as ‘minimum wage’ for nutrition where it is enough to get by and prevent sickness, but not enough to be vibrant and happy. For example, while 100% of Vitamin C will not generate scurvy or other deficiency symptoms, studies show that about 8 times that amount can increase life span by five and a half years. Thus, Ultra Vitality goes beyond the Daily Value recommendations on Vitamin C and other nutrients.
In addition to these amazing Vitamins and Minerals that are listed, Ultra Vitality includes an antioxidant blend, energy blend, nutritive herbal blend/urinary health blend, proprietary blend: digestive support/enzymes/probiotics, chlorphyll blend, and a super food blend/immune herbal blend. These are comprised of all natural ingredients. There is no caffine and no sugar in Ultra Vitality.
Ultra Vitality is a vital part of everybody’s daily needs. If you are interested in ordering, please see My Symmetry Page or click Live Better With Symmetry under blogroll. Or you can contact me directly at lisasurvillas@healthiestlife4me.com. In addition, the company has a Wellness Guarentee that gives you 120 days to like the product or your money back (contact me for details), so you either like them and feel better or you can get your money back.where is the harm in that? Let’s get started on a journey to total health today!
While hanging out on Twitter one night, I saw a blurb about being able to do push-ups. My curiosity took over and I asked why she was so focused on the amount of push-ups she could do and how many weeks she had to do it in. @Kelownagurl responded to me
with a website with this 100 Push-up Challenge.
I have become quite impressed with my strength in the past few months. And although I am struggling with my diet again, I am fully focused on my training. So, I inquired at 100 Push-up Challenge to see what all this fuss was about. And now have committed to this challenge. The program can be as long as 6 weeks depending upon how many push-ups you can currently do.
Here is how the program works:
1. Take an assessment of how many pushups you can do in one sitting. Do the push-ups correctly and don’t cheat if you want the program to work.
2. Go to the website 100 Push-up Challenge and email Steve and let him know that you are taking the challenge and he will add you to the list. Admitting to someone that you are taking the challenge will keep you accountable. Recruit a physical partner if you’d like to report to someone physically each week. Feel free to comment here each week if you want to have encouragement from me.
3. Print up each week and follow the directions. You do push-ups 3 times a week and depending upon the week you are told to start in and the amount you are capable of will determine how your workout will look each day.
4. Follow each week without cheating.
5. When you complete week 6, you will rest for 2 days and then you will try to do a set of 100 push-ups!
It may seem weird to have the need to do 100 push-ups, but the push-up is the most comprehensive upper body exercise that you can do. And most importantly.it can be done ANYWHERE!! You don’t need any special equipment or special facilities to do it in. When executing a regular push-up you are pushing 60% of your body weight. When you elevate your feet and do decline push-ups you push 80% of your body weight. Talk about upper body strength training.
So let’s get started on this journey together. And just because I am starting my program next week, doesn’t mean you can’t start yours anytime. You will be so proud of yourself for the accomplishment and even with the way your arms take shape!
Most women do not lift weights because they think that if they lift weights that they will get bulky, like a man. However, it is just a misconception. According to research, on average a woman only possesses one tenth of the testosterone that a man does. So even if you are able to lift twice as much as a man, the ability to get as bulky just isn’t there unless you are taking steroids. Due to these higher levels of testosterone men are able to build stronger, bigger muscles than women.
“When you flip through bodybuilding or fitness magazines, and you come across female bodybuilders who might resemble their masculine counterparts, remember that they partake in a completely different regimen from women who just workout to get or stay in shape, “says well known personal trainer, Hilton Preen.
Women who are already overweight or really unhappy with a certain body part are often very nervous to weight train because they fear that the muscle will build on top of the fat that is already there and therefore make them bigger. However, this is not how it works. Muscle does not ever build itself on the top of fat; it’s quite the opposite in fact. Muscle replaces the fat with muscle mass. Fat composition takes up five times as much space as muscle, so when you weight train you will replace fat mass with muscle mass therefore loose the jiggle as well as look leaner and slimmer too!
It is very important to know that fat doesn’t require ANY energy to maintain, it just sits there making you look and flabby. When you weight train, you increase the rate at which your body uses energy, forcing stored fat to breakdown into energy cells, which your body then uses to build muscle. Hilton Preen says, “Muscle tone allows you to burn calories at all times during the day and night. For every pound of lean tissue or muscle you put on, you will burn approximately seventy five additional calories at rest. The less muscle you have, the more difficult it is to lose the fat.”
To be quite honest, the biggest problem most women have ISN’T building too much muscle, it is that they don’t build ENOUGH muscle. This sets them up for an increased risk of osteoporosis later in life as well as a reduction in muscle mass of about 2-5% per year, which has an adverse affect on metabolism and can ultimately result in weight gain.
Obviously, weight training isn’t the only factor in a tone, well shaped body. Diet plays about 80% of the role in the overall look. However, even if you are following a healthy diet and performing some sort of aerobic activity, you will not get the best possible results without strength training. Even though you might be losing weight, your body shape will remain the same. Some women, no matter how hard they train never ever seem to look different. Sure, they look smaller, but if they are on such strict diets and aerobic programs why do they still look like a pear? No matter how much weight you lose on your diet, there is no way you can change the shape of your body without using weights. It is a combination of diet, cardio, and weight lifting that gives you the results that you desire.
Building muscle not only makes you look and feel healthier, but according to Hilton Preen, “it helps to slow down the hands of time. Between the ages of twenty and seventy, due to the aging process you could lose more than 25% of your muscle, a condition known as myoatrophy. Regular strength training can help prevent this. The optimal workout regimen should incorporate both weightlifting and aerobic activity.”
So ladies, I challenge you to Stop being afraid of the weights and start lifting. You will be so happy you did. If you are unsure of what to do and how to do it, pick up a Muscle and Fitness for Her or Oxygen magazine. They are both full of great exercises and sometimes workout programs that you can follow. When at the gym, don’t be afraid to ask questions. The men find it flattering to help and as long as you don’t ask in the middle of their set. Also, the trainers and staff at the gyms are available for questions too! Take advantage of the resources in front of you.
So, no food journal for today because I spent Friday in bed and yesterday I took the afternoon to enjoy with my daughter (and of course it included bad food and frozen yogurt). Well, today I paid. For the most part I have been great about my diet. I had a patch this summer when money got really tight that I didn’t pay that close of attention.and I paid then too. It wasn’t until I was sitting talking to my hubby (during commercial breaks during Desperate Housewives of course) that it dawned on me the similarities of both times. So you know me, before divulging any info to my hubby or you (my favorite readers), I of course started a frantic google search. And I’ll be damned.there it was. I figured it out. Who needs a doctor? Now, let’s see if I need one to fix the problem.
So, do I have you curious? Well, here goes.
Did you know that refined sugar can be the cause of the growth of Candida, which is the cause of a yeast infection? Well, now I do. Twice since March I have had a splurge of sugar indulgences in food or in desert while the rest of that time has had little to none at all and this is how I get repaid? What a crock! Now, I don’t want sugar everyday.but now and then a treat would be nice, but the result or possibility of this, NO THANK YOU!
So, I know you may think I am crazy, but here are the sites I found: http://www.disabled-world.com/artman/publish/candida-diet.shtml. This site states that “The main goal of the Candida Diet is to reduce the amount of food you eat that makes Candida yeast proliferate. The primary food source of yeast is sugar.” The other site I consulted was: http://www.credencegroup.co.uk/Eclub/Eclubsearchable2/210703/CTM%20-%20candida.htm. According to this site, it states plainly that I am not crazy: “What’s caused it? Excess antibiotic intake and those sugary, yeasty, alcoholic lifestyles.”
While I know that the first one is on a site for elderly, they get infections too!! And they eat a lot of sugar. Hmmmmm!
So, what I learned…get rid of refined sugar. Even organic white sugar is healthier than refined sugar. Great.more money to spend! Well, I guess it’s worth it.
